Classwork

Homework

Monday

9/20

  • Finish What’s Your Wave activity

    • Students will use what they know about the interior of the Earth and seismic waves to complete activities and answer questions about the interior of the Earth

  • New Madrid Earthquake PPT and questions

    • Read the account of the 1811 and 1812 New Madrid Earthquake. Use the account to describe it in your own words and draw a picture of it.

  • Finish What’s Your Wave Activity due Tues if not completed in class.

Tuesday

9/21

  • Travel time curves lab

    • We will be using cars to show how seismic waves move through the different layers of the earth. Students will work through steps in a lab to show the difference in speed between P and S waves as well as how that difference lets us know how far away from an earthquake’s epicenter a station is

  • None

Wednesday

9/22

  • Wuddaya Know Wednesday Quiz #4

  • Travel time curves lab

    • We will be using cars to show how seismic waves move through the different layers of the earth. Students will work through steps in a lab to show the difference in speed between P and S waves as well as how that difference lets us know how far away from an earthquake’s epicenter a station is

  • Travel Time Lab Questions due Thursday

Thursday

  • Travel Time Curves Lab completed for Friday

Friday

9/24

  • Analyzing Seismograph data

    • We will watch a video that shows how we read a seismogram in order to determine how far an earthquake originated from the station collecting the data.

  • Earthquake Seismic Stations Worksheet

    • Using a short video and what we have learned in class so far, students will label waves traveling through the Earth and match seismograms with station location

  • Travel Time Graph Questions

    • Use the travel time graph to answer questions about the P waves and S waves travel times

  • Go over work for the week

  • Study for Test next Thursday
